When our hearts finally left our throats and settled back into our chests, we boarded Hydro-Gin and headed to the nunnery and hospital on the other side of the island.
The buildings of these institutions were also dilapidated but they hold the most breath-taking ocean and mountain views. We hoped to find something left behind, maybe furniture, treasure, or some artefact from the chapel but nothing remained besides graffiti, signatures of people who visited the location and a few interesting emblem-like symbols on the paint peeled walls. One lucky Galavanter was fortunate enough to find an old medicine bottle!
At a crossroads, we ventured downhill and found ourselves at a small, quaint cemetery. Rocks covered the graves of the Dominican nuns who were of service to the lepers and died selflessly on Chacachacare.
Though the mood became sombre, our spirits still felt free and soon we were so one with nature, that we completely lost track of time. Before we knew it, it was time to head back to the mainland, but not before taking a swim of course! As we sailed back, we waved at the party boats and embraced the enclosing dusk.
The pleasure of taking a boat to Chacachacare is something that everyone should experience.
