WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND
2015 AUSTRALASIAN GAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
SEPTEMBER 30 - OCTOBER 3, 2015
NEW SOUTH WALES
CLEAN SWEEP
While last year’s Australasian GAA State Championships saw an even spread of
championship honors this
year’s event was the exact opposite. Last season it was not
the happiest for teams from
New South Wales (NSW),
especially the men’s sides,
but the recent championships at Wellington in New
Zealand turned out to be far
better with a clean sweep in
four championship codes for
NSW.

Te Whiti Park in the Lower Hutt Valley outside the city of
Wellington was the setting for this year’s Australasian GAA
State Games. Over four days from Wednesday 30th- Saturday Oct 3 saw 18 teams from across Australia and New
Zealand compete for the honour of best state teams in the
region in Hurling, Men’s and Ladies Gaelic Football as well as
in Camogie. The annual Australasian State championships
are one of the premier events on the GAA world sporting calendar where the best players from clubs get to play on state
12
teams and is perhaps the closest anywhere to an Irish intercounty scenario.
Not all teams could meet the travel costs and time commitments so hence just the one team made it from Western
Australia (WA), the ladies football team but unfortunately
the defending champions in Hurling from WA could not attend, or could their football counterparts who had ran-up
last year.
