Ahead of the game, Saint Dympnas were looking to avenge
their 2013 defeat to Rovers and first championship since 2008,
while Rovers sought to claim back the title they lost to Eire Og
of Oxford last year.
St Dympnas had the first chance of the game, when Cormac Healy was awarded a free from distance, after just two
minutes. The shot didn’t have the accuracy needed to open
up the score sheet for the Luton side however, and the sides
remained level.
ROVER’S INTENT
Glen Rovers meanwhile, showed they were not going to
relive another senior final defeat, and went three points
up one minute later.
Martin Joyce cut through the St Dympnas defense on
the left hand side and rifled a shot passed Jack Cheshire,
putting the ball to rest comfortably in the bottom right
hand corner of his net.
Sean McGonagle tried to counter for the Luton side immediately after Byrne’s blistering finish, but was brought
down by Eoin Callaghen, drawing a foul. St Dympnas,
again, had a chance to go on the score board, after Noel
Griffin awarded a free to the Luton men for the previous
foul, but the resulting free ricocheted off the upright and
out of play.
LUCK TURNED
However, St Dympnas luck eventually turned, after Kevin
Killian had a great run from midfield, laying the ball off to
Ciaran Gallen, who slid the ball passed Peter Beehan, to get
his side’s only goal of the game.
