FOREWORD FROM THE EDITOR
GAELIC SPORTS WORLD
PUBLISHER:
Pioneers and heroes are everywhere.
However, we have a tendency to overlook the
obvious ones staring us in the face each day
and instead get suckered into thinking others
with more of a worldly profile make a better fit.
We tend to think that if we don’t see
people on TV or plastered across some glossy
mag, well, then they’re not really up to much
and shouldn’t be considered for hero
worship. Of course, those wishing to sell
papers, magazines and TV ads, have a selfish,
vested interest into making the mass audience
think and do as they willed. Sometimes our
vision within a mass media lens can become
blurred until one day we are thrown back with
a jolt to reality, to the everyday, when we meet
people who show us the true colour of
heroism. Firefighters on 9/11 are Class A
examples.
College students can also be heroes. Like
those found travelling on the road to
Missoula, Montana today as they head to the
US National Collegiate Hurling Championships
at University of Montana this Memorial Day
Weekend. They are not just heroes because
some of the college students attending the
tournament have to travel on 16 and 37 hour
marathon road trips, but heroes and pioneers
because the sport of Hurling is unknown to
the US masses, yet, young Americans who
have fallen in love with the national sport of
Ireland, are endeavouring one player, one
campus at a time, to grow the sport. They are
persevering on the ground and in the trenches
far away from the glare of lights and lenses.
In Issue 26 in our feature story, we highlight
the 5th NCGAA Hurling Championships and
the rise of hurling on US college campuses.
