GAELIC SPORTS WORLD Issue 22 – March 27, 2015 | Page 2

FOREWORD FROM THE EDITOR GAELIC SPORTS WORLD PUBLISHER: The global GAA year in the northern hemisphere, throws-in roughly around the middle of March. The Irish patron saint Patrick has a lot to do with getting things off and running as it’s around ‘Patrick’s Weekend that clubs worldwide start invitational and local tournaments. Indeed, not only is the saint responsible for providing the opportunity for Irish emigrants to gather but it’s the result of such ‘gatherings’ that often sparks the birth of a brand new GAA club somewhere in the world. Of course, the period around St. Patrick’s Day is long associated with colourful parades and party atmosphere with liberal amounts of refreshments flowing. Many festivities are on a city and countrywide scale with plenty of razzmatazz where everything is literally painted green – the Irish and Ireland seem to take over the planet. On a smaller scale, in small town festivals and particularly small organizations like Irish festivals or Field Days run by GAA clubs, often reflect a real sense of being part of a family and being part of a community. In issue 22, we look at festivities from a photographic perspective of different GAA clubs worldwide, and though thousands of miles apart, they’re linked not just in the obvious ways of being a GAA club, being Irish or of Irish descent, but linked by what takes place and the experiences of people.
