QUEENSLAND GAA
May 18th - June 1, 2014
After an excellent Carpenter Cup
competition, Queensland GAA began Round 1 of the Football Leagues
over the weekend of May 18.
The first game in Men’s Division
1, was highly anticipated as it was
a repeat of the Carpenter Cup final
between winner’s Harps and John
Mitchells. One point separated
them back then and again it was
Harp’s that came out best. Though
they trailed by 0-4 to 1-2 at the interval, they came back strong in the
second half for a comfortable 3-7 to
1-3 victory. The second game saw
Easts proving too much for Souths.
Three first half goals for Easts did
they trick here and despite a comeback from Souths in the second
half, Easts did enough for a 4-9 to
1-13 win. In the Men’s Division 2,
Harps had a comfortable victory
over John Mitchells 6-15 to 0-4, the
other two matches ended up as forfeits for Shamrocks and Gold Coast
over Souths and Easts respectively.
BIG WINS
The first game in the Ladies
league saw a big win for Carpenter Cup champs Easts over
Souths while in the second game
it was a similar scenario with
the cup runners-up John Mitchells too strong for the inexperienced Shamrocks. In the Hurling League there was just the one
game with Emeralds v Cuchulainn’s in a fourth round clash.
Emeralds were unbeaten so far
this year while Cuchulainn’s were
chasing a first win. Emeralds
proved too strong in a low scoring 1-10 to 0-4 affair. In a third
round Camogie clash, Naomh
Padraig handed Eire Og their first
loss 5-8 to 2-10.

ROUND 2 FOOTBALL
LEAGUE
MAY 23RD-25TH, 2014
The three team Camogie league
continued on Friday May 23,
with Eire Og bouncing back from
their defeat to Naomh Padraig
with a narrow four point victory
over a battling Tara.
On the Sunday in the first game
of Round 2 of the Men’s Div 1,
Harps continued with their good
form with a four point win over
Easts. At the half it was 1-4 to 0-5
in favour of Harps and despite
the fact that Easts were never too
far behind, they held on for 1-11
to 0-10 win. In the second game,
John Mitchells showed why they
ran-up in the Carpenter Cup
when too good for Souths on
a scoreline of 1-16 to 0-6. The
first of three Div 2 men’s football
games saw a massive scoreline
in favour of Easts when beating
John Mitchells by 10-8 to 2-7.
The second game saw cup finalists Gold Coast impress when
also running up big numbers to
beat Souths 6-15 to 5-5.
SHOCK
Then something of a shock occurred when cup winners Shamrocks failed to deliver and instead
it was Harps who took a good win
by 2-13 to 4-5. Shamrocks led at
the break by 2-5 to 0-6, however,
they were unable to push on and
allowed Harps to seize the initia-
tive. Two late goals for Shamrocks
put a gloss on the scoreboard. The
Ladies league saw a further two
games with all conquering Easts,
in a very one sided match, dish
out a heavy defeat to Shamrocks.
The second game however was a
tasty affair with John Mitchells
and Souths battling to a 1-8 draw.
This game ebbed back and forth
with Mitchells having the better
of the first half and leading at the
break by 0-5 to 0-2 for Souths.
But Souths turned things around
in the second period to snatch a
deserved draw.
Tara and Eire Og played an entertaining game under lights on
the Friday evening with Eire Og
bouncing back from their loss
last time to defeat a gallant Tara
by 1-9 to 1-5.
