National Collegiate GAA Nationals in New
York could be a game changer for spreading
Hurling and Gaelic football across America.
The college scene in America is a ripe
ground for planting the seeds of Gaelic
Sports given the large student populations
and the desire for students to keep fit and
play competitive games. The NCGAA nationals in NY GAA’s Gaelic Park and Paddy’s
Field in the Bronx, represented a four-fold
increase in the number of teams participating from last year’s event in the Midwest
and signals a real potential for Gaelic sports
to gain a foothold on US college campuses.
US students new to hurling are intrigued by
its sheer pace, skill set and physical nature
and once they take a hurl into their hands
it’s hard for them to let go. Those students
new to Gaelic football are introducing skills
that they picked up in basketball and to
good effect.
This issue also takes a look for the first time
at news and GAA happenings from Britain
Asia, and Europe introduces a coaching
development section while continuing with
news, analyses and opinion from USA and
Ireland.
