Warwickshire got their Inter Provincial Football campaign off to
winning start in County Kilkenny,
in Ireland on Sunday, May 25 with
a comfortable five point victory over
Kilkenny.
Host’s Kilkenny, took an early lead
through a Colin McGrath point
only for Warwickshire’s top scorer,
Paul Garvey to equalise soon after.
As things progressed, Warwickshire
midfielders, Brian Rush and Andy
Willis began to win a lot of possession in the centre of the park, and
together with forwards Donal Leahy, Michael Harrigan and especially
Garvey, the visitors were beginning
to look dangerous.
By the midpoint, Warwickshire had
edged in front through a Joseph Owens point and soon increased their
advantage with further scores from
Garvey, Brian Cuffe and Michael
Harrigan to see the visitors lead by
0-5 to 0-2 at half time.
On the restart, former Roscommon man, Paul Garvey, extended
the Warwickshire lead before Kilkenny had a let off when Owens sent a
shot crashing off the post. However,
the home side bounced back with a
38th minute goal from Pat Kinsella
to leave the minimum between the
sides. Garvey settled Warwickshire
nerves on 40 minutes with his fourth
point of the day and he added two
more before a Michael Harrigan free
sealed victory for Warwickshire on a
scoreline of 0-10 to Kilkenny’s 1-2.
