GAELIC SPORTS WORLD Issue 17 – January 10, 2015 | Page 20
We introduce new writer Brian Clerkin in this edition of Gaelic Sports World. Brian will be penning on a broad range
of subjects beginning with a field that is very familiar.
Brian Clerkin is currently European GAA Cultural and Languages Officer and former European GAA PRO (20122014). He is also co-founder of the Saint Gallen Bears GAA Club in Saint Gallen, Switzerland where he served as secretary (2010-2014) and is Results & Standings Co-Ordinator of the European GAA CCC since 2010.
THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD
GAA PUBLIC RELATIONS
OFFICER (PRO) - PART 1
BY BRIAN ‘BEANO’ CLERKIN
JAN 7, 2014
Anybody can be a PRO! Everybody as an individual
and as part of a collective in essence is a Public Relations
Officer for the Club, Board, County, Region, Province,
Country, Continent or International GAA Unit that they
represent.
I have been asked numerous times “What is a PRO?”,
“What should a PRO do?” and the honest answer is I
don’t think there can be a specific job description or definition per se. The GAA website has the following definition of a PRO Officer’s Role.
While this definition is fine and adequate to a point
there are certain elements that do not suit the World
GAA movement as it exists currently.
I have broken down my pointers of importance and my
examples of things to follow based on my own experience or observations and opinions on what I have seen in
action in the three headings below:
1. WHAT IS A PRO?
2. CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD PRO!
3. ASPIRATIONS, VISION OR STRATEGY FOR A PRO!
