GAELIC SPORTS WORLD Issue 15 - December 5, 2014 | Page 2

FOREWORD FROM THE EDITOR GAELIC SPORTS WORLD PUBLISHER: Recipes for success usually start with …. a recipe, a guide, a plan of action. Hard work, desire, determination are necessary ingredients in getting something started be it a business or a sports club, but without a map, a written plan of action, all the good will in the world can quickly turn everything to dust. The South Africa Gaels have big plans, big ambitions for the growth of Gaelic sports in South Africa, particularly with Gaelic Football. Their strategy, while reflecting local traditions and geographic regions, isn’t something that is otherworldly to GAA ethos in Ireland, in fact it mirrors it. The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in Ireland is based on having local clubs for local communities, but in many GAA clubs around the world, setup by I rish immigrants, they have a tendency to forget what has worked in I reland and look to the Irish diaspora to populate clubs and competitions. The people running things in South Africa, and they include Irish immigrants, feel that such setups are unsustainable and so have set in motion a plan to bring Gaelic football to the country. In Issue 15, Gaelic Sports World details such plans for GAA in South Africa.
