GEORGIA ASSOCIATION OF CHIEFS OF POLICE Online Quarterly News 1st Quarter - 2018 Message from the President As we are now through the Holiday Season and heading into the New Year, I would like to take this opportunity to give thanks for the blessings afforded to me. First, I would like to thank the members of our association for electing me to serve as your president. It is, indeed, quite an honor to me. I would also like to thank the dedicated members of the GACP for what they do in their own communities and also their contribution in contin- uing to keep our association strong. And I also thank your hardworking GACP staff who work tirelessly to keep our association and conferences running smoothly. And finally, I give thanks for my wife and my family. I encourage each of you to also spend time in the New Year with your families because without their support we simply could not do the jobs we love and do. Inside The 2018 Winter Conference is rapidly approaching. The dates are February 5-7, 2018 at the Classic Center in Athens and our new host hotel will be The Hyatt. The deadline for registering is January 11, 2018. As always, your Executive Director will there staying abreast of the rapidly moving topics related to our profession. Some items we may see this year include:  A possible approach by the Senate, and possibly the House to look at law enforcement salaries to see if the State of Georgia can help supple- ment;  A bill dealing with hands-free devices in vehicles, along with possible fines and/or points increases for texting and driving;  Drug laws related to opioid abuse may be reexamined. Possible submission of data to a central repository by law enforcement/first re- sponders regarding Narcan use and its effectiveness at reversing the ill effects of opioid overdoses may be required;  Mandate of law enforcement agencies to submit electronically all acci- dent reports.
