[ Evaluation of the G20 Leaders Summit in St Petersburg on September 5-6 ]
only marginal, as only a handful of their recommendations addressed the issue of youth unemployment directly. Not surprisingly, the G20 Leader’ s Declaration never refers to YOUTH 20. A strategy to strengthen the role of the YOUTH 20 outreach group can be to concentrate on topics which are directly related to the youth or a cooperation with other outreach groups( similar to LABOUR 20 and BUSINESS 20).
Think 20: Inspired by this year’ s agenda of the Russian G20 Presidency –“ Sustainable, inclusive and balanced growth and jobs creation around the world” – the 2013 objectives and recommendations of THINK 20 exclusively concentrated on three major economic topics. Regarding the impact of these recommendations, we diagnose a mixed result after this year’ s Leader’ s Summit in St. Petersburg: By definition, topics like job creation, economic growth and financial regulation made it into the final declaration in many respects, this however often at the expense of vague formulations and non-binding commitments. THINK 20’ s strong focus on debt, financial regulation and investment / trade translated only to important results in the area of financial regulation. Proposals for improved monitoring of all kinds of debt, increased international coordination and concrete commitments to drive down debt in the long-term did not have a strong impact.
