[Evaluation of the G20 Leaders Summit in St Petersburg on September 5-6]
Other topics
In addition to the topics mentioned above, we would like some more important topics
that were covered, but played only a minor role in the Leaders’ declaration: Open
trade, climate change and inclusive development.
Regarding open trade, leaders agreed on a rules-based, transparent and non-
discriminatory WTO-based trading system as well as on Regional Trade Agreements
to boost economic growth. For dealing with climate change, the declaration refers to
the commitment to a full implementation of the outcomes of Cancun, Durban and
Doha. To ensure inclusive development for all, food security and nutrition are seen as
a top priority to ensure inclusive growth and to narrow the development gap
All these recommendations as well as further paragraphs on corruption and other
topics only play a minor role and they mostly consist of reiterations and no clear
commitments. This is especially disappointing as on the one hand, most outreach
groups based many of their key claims on topics such as inclusive development,
climate change or food security. On the other hand, these topics are key challenges
of the global community and therefore need to be addressed with a high priority.
