CONTINUING EDUCATION AND PLANNING FOR GENERATIONAL CHANGE
In FY24, the Arlington Fire Department underwent a significant organizational restructuring that included five promotions, 18 position reclassifications, and several administrative changes. These shifts, coupled with the natural attrition of experienced leadership, have contributed to what is now considered a relatively“ young” department in terms of experience.
Recognizing the importance of preparing the next generation of leaders, the department has proactively addressed training gaps and committed to strengthening internal development. AFD has enhanced its continuing education efforts by implementing specialized, in-house training programs designed to accelerate growth and ensure operational readiness across all ranks. Key training initiatives:
IN-HOUSE LEADERSHIP SERIES( LEVELS 1 – 4)
A progressive leadership development track designed to prepare members for increasing levels of responsibility.
IN-HOUSE AERIAL OPERATIONS COURSES
Hands-on instruction focused on the safe and effective use of aerial apparatus in various emergency scenarios.
IN-HOUSE SECOND DRIVER PROGRAMS
Targeted training for personnel stepping into secondary driving roles, ensuring they gain ample experience in apparatus operation and deployment.
INCIDENT SAFETY OFFICER( ISO) TRAINING
A mandatory class for all Captains and above to reinforce the principles of scene safety and risk management.
These initiatives not only support our operational effectiveness but also ensure that we are building a strong foundation of capable, confident leaders for the future.
