Residents Go Behind-the-Scenes for University

In March 2025, Arlington Water Utilities welcomed the first ever class of Arlington Water Utilities University. Water Department Director Alex Whiteway, who joined the department less than a year earlier, introduced the five-week citizens academy. Arlington Water Utilities University involved every division of the utility and was designed to give residents an inside look at how water reaches their homes and to meet the hard-working, well-trained individuals involved in this process.
The response from the community was strong, with more than 80 applications received for the first class. Department leadership carefully selected residents to represent every ZIP code across Arlington, ensuring a diverse cross-section of the city. A maximum class size of 25 was established to allow engaging tours of sites like the City’ s two water treatment plants. Three Arlington City Council persons have also been“ students” of the university. A second session was held in the fall 2025 and another class started in March 2026.
In a feedback survey distributed to the inaugural class, responses were overwhelmingly positive. One participant stated,“ This far exceeded any expectations I had. I will be sharing the information with my neighbors and friends and encouraging others to sign up for future classes.”
