(1933— 2018)
Chief Strickland served as AFD’s Fire Chief from 1982
to 1997. During his tenure, he implemented many
programs including a physical fitness program with
annual physicals and fitness standards, officer training
programs, vertical ventilation tactics, instituted a
hazardous materials response team, created an
Incident Command System for the EOC, established
mutual aid agreements
with neighboring cities,
and
expanded
public
safety programs. In March
2017, he returned to Arlington for the first time since his
retirement and is pictured with many of the department's
highest ranking leaders who he had a hand in hiring, promoting,
or developing. Chief Strickland passed away on February 23,
2018.
