Fire Dept Maltese Cross
History of the Maltese Cross:
The symbol most associated with the Fire Service
is known as the Maltese Cross, but the symbol is
actually the Florian Cross. It is used the world
over as an insignia for fire departments and
firefighters. St. Florian is the patron saint of
firefighters. The cross is made up of four vshaped arms, giving it eight points on the outside
edge. Crosses of this design have been used since
around the First Crusade in 1096. The design is
said to symbolize the eight points of courage:
loyalty, piety, bravery, frankness, glory and honor,
no fear of death, compassion toward the sick and poor, and respect for the church.
In the 1100s it was adopted by the Knights of Malta (Knights Hospitaller) as their
symbol, and thus became the Maltese Cross.
Arlington Fire Department Maltese Cross:
The Maltese Cross is the universal insignia for the
Fire Service. Any non-English speaking/reading
citizen will recognize the Maltese Cross symbol and
feel safe. There is no interpretation needed, for the
Maltese Cross means assistance and symbolizes
“Fire Department.” Because of the universal
recognition of the Maltese cross, the insignia is not
perceived as a Law Enforcement emblem on
emergency scenes. It represents a clear distinction
as to who we are and that we’re there to help. The
AFD Maltese Cross is the core symbol of our Fire
Department. Included in our Maltese Cross are the four core values that keeps us
strong and guide us as we make a difference in the community we serve.
