TIFMAS Activation
In January 2015, a
major accident
occurred on westbound
Interstate 20 involving
an overturned 3,000gallon propane truck.
The resulting fire
threatened highway
traffic as well as
nearby homes and
businesses. Members
of the Arlington Fire
Department
immediately responded
and aggressively acted
to secure, stabilize,
and render safe this
hazardous materials
incident. On-scene commanders and
responders from both Fire and Police worked
together for 28 hours to ensure the public’s
safety. While the Fire Department moved
aggressively to mitigate the emergency, the
Arlington Police Department quickly managed
all traffic and security issues to support our
team. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC)
and other City departments came together with
Fire and Police
to support
responders on
the scene for the
duration of the
incident.
In late 2015, a wildland fire
started in the Hidden Pines
area near Bastrop. State and
local officials determined
additional firefighting assets
would be needed and a
request was sent to the State
Operations Center (SOC) to
activate the Texas Intrastate
Fire Mutual Aid System
(TIFMAS). The responding
team consisted of highlytrained firefighters from
both Arlington and Fort
Worth. The fire would
eventually grow to over
4,582 acres and destroy
50 homes and seven
businesses. The team
was assigned to various
locations throughout the
state including
Greenville, and later Killeen, where they fought
several wildland fires, including another large
fire in Harker Heights that burned over 60
acres. All units returned to Arlington/Fort
Worth with no injuries reported. This was
Arlington’s first TIFMAS activation and served
as an invaluable experience for the team.
