The Arlington Fire
Department’s fleet consists of
17 front-line engines, five frontline aerial apparatus, two
demand/special event engines,
two light response SUVs, five
command SUVs, seven brushfire trucks, four specialized
rescue units, three rescue
boats, a hazardous materials
response unit, an air & light
support truck, along with
numerous light duty support
and off road vehicles. The
Reserve Apparatus Facility
houses an additional five
reserve engines and two reserve aerial apparatus. The average age of our fire apparatus fleet is
just over 8 years. Our fleet is valued at over $17 million.
Members of the Section, with participation from the City’s Fleet Manager, work together within the
Apparatus Committee to provide volunteered services on fire apparatus design, specification,
research and development; purchasing and procurement planning and inspections, in service
training on new apparatus, and to comprehensively manage the heavy fleet replacement process.
Considerations and practices in heavy fleet management and replacement include Fire and Public
Works industry standards, overall age of the vehicle, power train usage hours, mileage tracking
and management, maintenance costs, obsolescence, operating costs, replacement cost and also
fund availability.
