Fire Prevention
The City of Arlington passed an ordinance adopting the 2009 International Fire Code, as well as a new Gas Well Amendment and Operational Permit fee. The development and implementation of the Department’ s Gas Well Inspection Program took full-stride in April 2012 with the first Gas Well Inspector class in Richmond, Texas and the creation of a Gas Well Specialist position. In August, Arlington Fire Prevention hosted the NFA Water Protection System class, which was wellattended by inspectors from around the region. During the past fiscal year, Fire Prevention Inspectors conducted over 14,500 Fire Code compliance inspections at commercial or public buildings, licensed facilities or operations, and other buildings in the city of Arlington. These Inspectors also played a key role in crowd management and path of egress maintenance at large-scale venues such as Cowboys Stadium, Six Flags Over Texas, and Ballpark at Arlington. Fire Prevention supported the Fire Department’ s efforts after the tornado in April by helping to identify those properties that were not habitable and offering general assistance to residents. Most Fire Prevention Inspectors are also certified in other disciplines, including peace officer, explosive detection canine handler, and explosive ordnance disposal technician.
The three-member Fire Prevention support staff was responsible for the data entry of approximately 11,000 inspections in AMANDA and 670 fire incident reports in Firehouse. The team monitors the timely completion of all incident reports. They collected and processed over $ 430,000 in permit and inspection fees, as well as responding to 640 Open Records Requests.
