Enhance Regional Mobility
I
n 2014, there were few areas of the City not affected by major construction projects that will increase the
safety and maneuverability of Arlington streets. Driven by past bond elections, a street maintenance tax and
comprehensive planning efforts, the projects also are designed to make the City more aesthetically pleasing
and easier to navigate. Future growth at Arlington’s airport is being studied, and riders are taking advantage of
the MAX commuter bus service.
Roads Sales Tax Renewed
Voters renewed a four-year
Street Maintenance Sales Tax to
fund various road improvement
projects. State legislation
allows municipalities to collect
a quarter-cent sales tax to use
exclusively for the maintenance
and rehabilitation of existing
public streets. The tax is used to
provide timely and cost-effective
rehabilitation and preventive
maintenance of 3,000 lane miles
of public streets within the city
limits of Arlington. The goal is to
improve mobility and maintain
roadways to prevent deterioration
and costly rebuilds. Crack seal
programs have been completed
on streets to seal the surface and
prevent moisture infiltration and
deterioration. Asphalt milling and
reclamation treatments built new
road bases and street surfaces in
several areas of the City.
