community estimated at $46 million
dollars a year. Record sales tax revenue
means Arlington is poised to pay off
its $325 million stadium debt 10 years
early, saving taxpayers $154 million in
interest. The City already has paid off
$100 million of its investment in the
project.
The Dallas Cowboys struck a new
naming rights deal between the team
and AT&T. Arlington will receive some
revenue from the stadium naming
rights deal to help pay off debt. Under
the bond package approved by voters,
Arlington will receive 5% of the
naming rights deal, up to $500,000 per
year.
When the Arlington Highlands
shopping complex was conceived, the
City Council provided development
support through a “tax increment
reinvestment zone.” Since then, more
than 800,000 square feet of shops and
restaurants have been developed. And
Arlington Highlands is now among
the five highest-valued properties in
Arlington with a total value of over
$150 million.
An Emphasis on Revitalization
City leaders have made
revitalization in certain areas of
Arlington a priority over the past
decade. The northern portion of
the Entertainment District is one
of those areas. In 2006, the City
Council approved the Lamar/Collins
overlay for redevelopment. The effort
was designed to develop standards
that will help ensure high-quality
redevelopment. In FY 2013, a new
vision for the overlay was introduced as
new lane-widening construction began
on the 1.5-mile section of East Lamar
Boulevard that runs in front of the Six
Flags Hurricane Harbor water park,
bringing further progress into this area.
The road will be widened from four
lanes to six lanes and be completely
rebuilt. New sewer and water lines as
well as upgraded median landscaping,
decorative poles for streetlights and
signals and street trees between curb
and sidewalk also will be included and
will be built within the design standards
of the Entertainment District.
