For some Catalina 22 owners , one of the best things Beattie did was to assist in organizing the local Fleet 77 . This group actively supports the ideas of racing and cruising . Because of Fleet 77 , FWYC has been honored in hosting several Catalina 22 National Regattas as well as other class events . In fact , Fleet 77 stages a week long cruise each year in the month of May , rallying from and returning to the Fort Walton Yacht Club . These Catalina 22 owners come from all over the county to participate in the annual event .
Beattie ’ s legacy to yachting , especially sailboat racing , cannot be measured in trophies won , boats built , or even honors received . His legacy to yachting lives on today in the hundreds of boys and girls , men and women who found the lifetime passion for sailing through his inspiration , guidance , and teaching . Beattie will certainly be missed at the Fort Walton Yacht Club and throughout the world of yachting .
