Jibin’ with the Juniors
The Juniors continue to represent FWYC at outside regattas and are finding it both exciting and competitive.
Ian Hunter, George Hambleton and David Beaudry traveled to Lake Norman in Charlotte, North Carolina
June 6-8 to compete in the US Sailing Area D JR Semifinals on Flying Scots. The conditions were typical lake
conditions, with winds up and down. The Team came home with a Third in what many of the old-time Scot
sailors on Race Committee said was some of the most exciting Scot sailing they had seen in a long time! The
following weekend, FWYC was the most well-represented club at the GYA 420 Championship at Long Beach
Yacht Club with three teams competing. The Sailors got an added bonus during the regatta as they were able
to compete against a Junior who will be representing the United States at the Worlds in Barcelona, Spain this
summer. Again, there was "neck and neck" sailing with tight finishes in light air and medium air. David
Beaudry and Ian Hunter brought home Second and were only one point behind the Team USA Sailor! Also
representing FWYC were Kelly Stukbauer and Adam Metruck placing Fourth and George Hambleton and
Jonathan Balent placing Eighth.
Todd Garner was one of only two juniors to participate in the Catalina 22 Nationals held in June at the
Lakewood Yacht Club in Houston, Texas. Todd crewed for Keith Bennett from Montgomery, Alabama. They
got Third place out of thirty-eight boats in this wet and windy week-long regatta on Galveston Bay.
Several of the Juniors moved directly on to Laser sailing to prepare for an upcoming Laser regatta and the
Junior Lipton Team is practicing on Flying Scots for the Junior Lipton Challenge which will be held at Southern
Yacht Club in New Orleans 18 -20 July.
