Current standings have Darren Cooke leading the fleet, followed by Russell Brown and David Beaudry. Sun and wind was all that was needed on this beautiful Sunday afternoon. Finishing First were the Wiluszes on Myasasaur followed by Scram skippered by Jennifer Wray. Jerry Black on Pelirrojas is still in first place in the series, but only by a point, as Scram, Two-Pot Screamer, and Myasasaur close in. Thanks to the crew of Pelirrojas for providing the great array of food for the racers after the race. leave a mark on the required side. Also, (a) room to sail to the mark when her proper course is to sail close to it, and (b) room to round the mark as necessary to sail the course. However, mark-room for a boat does not include room to tack unless she is overlapped inside and to windward of the boat required to give mark-room and she would be fetching the mark after her tack. My first month as Fleet Captain has been pretty busy! I'd like to thank everybody for their help so far, and am looking forward to the next couple of months. As I mentioned in my January article, I do have a few goals for the year. First and foremost, I really want to expand the volunteer base here at the yacht club. For those members who don't sail or own a boat, helping with regattas is a wonderful way to be on the water at no expense. We have a warm and supportive group of racers, as well as very knowledgeable race committee members who are always interested in teaching. So, not only will you get to enjoy our beautiful bay, you'll lea rn a thing or two. We have our first regional event in March, the WetaFest. This will be basically a four-day event, so dust off your foul weather gear and base layers, and come help us do race committee! If fresh air and sunshine isn't your forte, then we can always use help with registration, making creative trophies, photography, and about a million other things. If you want to be active at the club, now is the time! My second goal is to get our sponsorship network extended to the local community. Not only does that help me run better regattas and programs with more value to the participants, but it really makes us more visible in the community. My third and most personal goal is to increase participation in GYA events. We are fortunate to belong to the GYA, and have a fantastic opportunity to make 100% participation this year. A strong traveling group is one of the reasons our club program has grown in the last ten years, and I want to give as much support to that as possible. Congratulations to everyone who came to my first sailor's meeting in January - you are now part of my Race and Regatta Committee! Let's face it, who knows more about racing and regattas than the people who race? Our next meeting will be on February 12, 6:00 PM, before darts. ~ Fort Walton Yacht Club, Established in 1951 ~
