FWYC Juniors Sail in Jr. Lipton Challenge A group of five FWYC Juniors ventured to Pass Christian, Mississippi to compete in the GYA Junior Lipton Challenge July 21-23. George Hambleton, Ian Hunter, Merideth McIntosh, William Wells and Conlin Arrowsmith sailed against 14 other GYA teams in a total of five races. Poor weather conditions meant only one race could be completed on the first day. Skippers George, Ian and Meredeth lead the team to an overall 4th place finish for FWYC! Notably, George skippered crew Ian and Williams to first place in Race 4. While four of the five juniors had sailed together in the 2016 Junior Liptons, new team mate Conlin joined to round out the team. This event was Conlin’s first regatta. After this experience, he is excited about sailing and hopes to continue to compete with the FWYC Juniors. Skipper Ian demonstrated impressive and finely honed sailing skills in leading crew Merideth and William. After an impressive 1st place start in the final race, an unexpected OCS was called on FWYC. However, that did not dampen Ian’s determination. After taking the penalty and being left far behind, Ian and crew still managed to pass more than half the fleet to finish in 7th place. Ian’s will and determination meant the team was still able to achieve fourth place overall. Senior Advisor, world class competitive sailor and FWYC member, Paul Beaudry, came to coach and debrief the team after their races. Parents Stephen and Candie Arrowsmith traveled to PCYC and helped cheer on the team for the weekend. Richard and Diane Wells hosted the entire team and Coach Paul to live aboard their Hatteras, Sometimes Heaven, for the weekend. All had a great time on board, dining on a gourmet breakfast of Belgian waffles, fruit, eggs and bacon before the first race each morning. Sometimes Heaven be- came the “official” view- ing vessel, luncheon host and crew change station for FWYC. Congratulations to the done and a memorable Juniors on a job well weekend!
