A Mother's Cry For Justice:

The Dinyal New Story

I’ve conducted many interviews and written a lot of compelling stories throughout the years, but there’s one story, in particular, which I’ve been following for a while now; one which has swept the nation. It has been very touching and heartfelt to me, as well as many others. If you are a parent reading this story, it will definitely have you loving and embracing your children even more.

This is the story of Dinyal New. I first heard about the story through a friend living in the California area and was told that I should reach out to her and write an article for the magazine. So I reached out through social media. When Dinyal reached back and provided her phone number, I then had to convince myself to go ahead and make the call, because under the circumstances, I wasn’t exactly sure of what to say or how to approach her, but I finally made the call. I want to first tell you a little about Dinyal. She resides in Oakland, CA. She is a very caring person with a heart of gold. She has her B.A. degree and has held down a position in the workforce as a social worker. Just as a lot of us,

Dinyal has always been a loving mother towards her children, carrying out a routine that is familiar to a lot of mothers: making sure they get to school, going to work to make sure they are fed and clothed, spending quality time with them, providing plenty of love, nurture and making sure they are safe. What if you wake up one day and that’s all gone?

Dinyal’s sons, Lee Weathersby III and Lamar Broussard, have always been her pride and joy; her heart. Like any mother, her first mind is to always check in on them and make sure they were ok; something Dinyal has always done. On January 1, 2014 Dinyal’s life would take a drastic change. On New Year's Eve, her youngest son, Lee, had left a Boys and Girls Club gathering. As the 13-year-old was nearing home, he was approached by gunmen and shot twenty-seven times. Lee would later die on January, 1, 2014 at 4:42am. Hours before this happened, Dinyal had gotten off work and went home. When she got there, Lee was laying in her bed. She was at home with him for about an hour
