know the origin behind the song. “We were performing at Texas A & M one night. We had a hit song called “Do Your Thing” and when we finished singing, everybody kept stomping and I said Express Yourself and they said “Waaahh.” They were stomping so and I said this is going to be my next song, so I started writing the song and the next day I got on the plane coming back to L. A. and was writing on my way home and by the time I got off that plane, it was finished,” Wright said. The song is still popular among today’s society. He also had a hit, in the UK, called “Keep Saying,” but the musician wouldn’t find out that it was a hit until years later. I asked what the inspiration behind him writing the song was and he answered, “I just write songs. I wrote that song, everybody liked it and everybody wanted to do it,” said Wright.

His advice to those upcoming artists is “Start making music. You have a machine generating music. When you play drums, it’s from the heart. That machine has no heart. Start making music. Put music back into the schools. What they’re doing today isn’t music, it’s a simulation of music. We had superior music.”

His favorite quote: It’s not what you look like when you’re doing what you’re doing, it’s what you’re doing when you look like you’re doing what you’re doing.

The Legendary Wright has paved the way for many artists and has rendered upon us all an extraordinary legacy. He also has an e-book coming out soon, which will touch on his life in the Mississippi Delta and what his family experienced during post slavery. I encourage everyone to purchase a copy when the book launches.
