FINANCIAL LITERACY
STUDENT RESOURCE
Learn how to
maximise
your money
Would you like to own your house one
day, or even a property portfolio? Boost
your savings? Avoid costly debt and make
valuable investments?
F
inancial literacy – the ability to understand your
finances and to nurture your own financial
health – is the key to achieving all of these things
and to budgeting for day-to-day activities. It’s
a vital life skill that can make a tangible difference
to your quality of life.
To help young people manage their own money, now and
throughout their lives, Future TalentEd is partnering with national
education charity Young Enterprise (YE), to share practical
resources promoting financial literacy. Our series starts here, with
a money challenge investigating responsible consumerism, and
activities to do at home around demystifying financial jargon and
the importance of saving.
Develop an enterprising mindset
YE’s varied resources are not limited to financial planning. The
charity provides young people with opportunities to apply crucial
skills in real and relevant ways, helping them to develop a positive,
‘enterprising mindset’. Once developed, this mindset informs
the approach an individual takes to life’s challenges, whether
these relate to finance, work or even relationships.
YE also provides a wide range of support, from fully immersive
experiences that last a full academic year, to tools and resources
that educators can use to develop and deliver their own
provision. It’s new three-year strategy – No Time Like The Future
– was set well before Covid-19, but is more relevant than ever.
Young people have the potential to be the hardest hit by the
coronavirus crisis. To be able to showcase their abilities beyond
academic qualifications is crucially important: facing challenges
in a constructive way, and using an enterprising mindset to
navigate successful pathways to opportunity.
The strategy has a vision that every young person has the
opportunity to:
• learn the vital skills needed to earn and look after their money
• develop an enterprising mindset
• make a valuable contribution to their community and society.
To make this happen over the next three years, YE will provide 1
million opportunities to help young people activate their ambition,
mobilise 40,000 volunteers, teachers, and alumni, and secure
£16m in funds.
