LEADERSHIP
“Be brave, because
only you know how
far you can go”
LENNY HENRY, COMEDIAN
Ex-England
rugby coach
Sir Clive
Woodward on
active listening
Former-NBA
star John
Amaechi on
being present
People who interact with
me know that I am
present with them in the
conversation I have with
them. I am engaged; I am
listening. I am there to
help them solve their
challenges and I will use
whatever skills I have to
do so. Being present with
people and making them
feel listened to and
supported is so
important.
There is no substitute for
working hard. You’ve got to
throw as much energy and
passion at your goals as
possible and hope your
plans map out. I don’t think
I’ve got great ideas, but I am
great at listening. A huge part
of leading is listening to
others and enabling their
ideas to happen; making
sure your whole team
comes up with the ideas.
Rose Anne Evans,
Time to Change
campaigner,
on resilience
The main two mental health
issues I’ve struggled with are
obsessive compulsory disorder
and anorexia nervosa. I’ve
spent a lot of time in hospital
and to overcome that, I had to
have a lot of resilience and
support from friends and family.
I found it difficult to get back
into everyday life. Finding things
I enjoyed and engaging with
people again helped me
recover and develop myself
and my confidence. It’s about
finding your passion.
