TO RECAP, HERE’S WHAT WE COVERED:
collaboration between employers and educators
Carl Ward, immediate past president of ASCL, and Claudia Harris,
CEO of The Careers & Enterprise Company, opened the day’s
proceedings, giving their views on why educators and employers
must work together to provide young people with the skills they’ll
need for a future characterised by uncertainty. Meanwhile, Sir
John Holman outlined the evidence behind the Gatsby
Benchmarks and what constitutes good career guidance in
secondary schools, where many of the ‘make-or-break’ decisions about
further education, training and jobs are made.
essential employability skills
Living to the age of 100 is a real prospect for people entering the workforce today.
Hot Spots Movement’s Emma Birchall explored what it takes to live a happy, healthy and
productive 100-year-life and the critical role education plays in ensuring young people
have the capabilities and mindset to thrive. Founder of The Skills Builder Partnership Tom
Ravenscroft offered guidance on how to turn eight essential employability skills into
teachable, digestible chunks. Later in the day, conference host, entrepreneur Tim Campbell,
led a thought-provoking panel discussion featuring Kirstie Mackey, director of citizenship
and consumer affairs at Barclays UK, education consultant Jane Delfino MBE, and three
young people who discussed their personal transition from education to the workplace.
the importance of being open
about mental health
Time to Change director Jo Loughran
shared a powerful video and explained
that experiencing a negative reaction
to a mental health problem can impact
on young people’s employability and
career development in later life. She
outlined the role teachers can play in
tackling stigma, later facilitating a
stimulating panel discussion where
par ticipants shared their own
experiences of mental health problems
and described what makes a mentally
healthy school.
