EXPLORE ELITIST BRITAIN 2019
An enlightening snapshot of the
pathways taken by those in the
most influential positions in
Britain, through education from
school to university, is provided
by the Sutton Trust, a leading
organis ation in the social
mobility space.
Its tool allows users to filter by
sector to understand how
people have made it to their
current career.
For example, the data shows
that large numbers of opinion
formers and news editors across
broadcast , print and online
media continue to come from
privileged backgrounds, while
the arts sector saw some of the
lowest proportions of Oxbridge
graduates, with just 2% of top
s e l l i n g p o p mu s i c a r t i s t s
attending the two universities,
and more than 70% not attending
university at all. However, among
the wealthiest members of the
TV, film and music industries,
there were substantial numbers
of independent school attendees
(38%). Despite this, popular
music appears more diverse
than those at the top of the
acting profession.
Business had some of the
highest rates of those educated
abroad among the elite, with
around half of FTSE 350 CEOs
and the Sunday Times Rich List
top 100 schooled internationally,
reflecting the nature of many of
the business listed in the FTSE
350. Looking only at those
educated in the UK, there were
high proportions of the privately
educated, even among
e nt re p re n e u r s a n d t h e
tech sector.
Me a nw h i l e , wo me n a re
under-represented across the
top professions, making up just
5% of FTSE 350 CEOs, 16% of local
government leaders, 24% of
senior judges and 35% of
top diplomats.
