NEWS ROUND-UP EXPLORE ELITIST BRITAIN 2019 An enlightening snapshot of the pathways taken by those in the most influential positions in Britain, through education from school to university, is provided by the Sutton Trust, a leading organis ation in the social mobility space. Its tool allows users to filter by sector to understand how people have made it to their current career. For example, the data shows that large numbers of opinion formers and news editors across broadcast , print and online media continue to come from privileged backgrounds, while the arts sector saw some of the lowest proportions of Oxbridge graduates, with just 2% of top s e l l i n g p o p mu s i c a r t i s t s attending the two universities, and more than 70% not attending university at all. However, among the wealthiest members of the TV, film and music industries, there were substantial numbers of independent school attendees (38%). Despite this, popular music appears more diverse than those at the top of the acting profession. Business had some of the highest rates of those educated abroad among the elite, with around half of FTSE 350 CEOs and the Sunday Times Rich List top 100 schooled internationally, reflecting the nature of many of the business listed in the FTSE 350. Looking only at those educated in the UK, there were high proportions of the privately educated, even among e nt re p re n e u r s a n d t h e tech sector. Me a nw h i l e , wo me n a re under-represented across the top professions, making up just 5% of FTSE 350 CEOs, 16% of local government leaders, 24% of senior judges and 35% of top diplomats.
