Higher Education
What are the key trends set to shape how Higher Education in South Africa evolves over the next decade?
The higher education landscape in South Africa will be shaped by rapid technological advancement, persistent inequality and unemployment, and shifting expectations of the societies, industries and communities that higher education serves. We will continue to see strong growth in online learning, enabling institutions to expand access and meet the needs of working professionals. However, unequal access to technology can deepen existing divides if not carefully managed, and these approaches remain relevant only if they continue to deliver outcomes aligned to industry and societal needs, including graduate employability, institutional responsiveness, and the long-term sustainability of the sector.
There is also a clear shift toward lifelong learning, where qualifications are part of a continuous journey rather than a once-off achievement. Institutions will need to become more agile, adapting their curricula to changing industry demands. Programmes may be reconceptualised towards micro-credentials and shorter, more focused learning experiences alongside traditional qualifications. At the same time, institutions must balance this with a focus on developing graduates who can think critically, adapt quickly, and apply knowledge responsibly in complex environments.
How is MANCOSA preparing students for future careers in this rapidly evolving digital era, including for roles that don’ t yet exist?
We’ ve moved beyond preparing students for specific roles. We’ re preparing them for uncertainty. At MANCOSA, this means focusing on foundational skills such as critical thinking, adaptability, and ethical decisionmaking. Technology is embedded into learning, but only as a tool students must learn to use responsibly.
We encourage students to see tools like AI as collaborators, rather than shortcuts. There is a strong emphasis on evaluating information, questioning outputs, and applying judgement. Many of our students are already in the workplace, creating an immediate feedback loop between theory and practice. This allows them to test ideas in real time and build a resilience and problemsolving ability that remains relevant regardless of how roles evolve. This approach also reinforces the importance of responsible innovation and digital literacy in a rapidly changing world.
In a rapidly changing technological world, responsible decisionmaking is as important as technical competence. Students are encouraged to consider the broader impact of their actions on organisations and society.
How is MANCOSA maintaining academic excellence while integrating digital innovation?
Our approach is simple: technology must enable learning. Digital platforms allow flexible, accessible learning, particularly for working students. However, academic rigour remains a non-negotiable.
We are also conscious of the challenges of digital learning, particularly when it comes to academic integrity. Rather than relying only on detection tools and rules, MANCOSA has adopted an approach focused on application, reflection, and critical engagement. Regurgitation of knowledge is no longer sufficient in a world where information is widely accessible, while application and reflection remain distinctly human strengths.
Technology supports learning, but cannot replace educators in guiding, mentoring, and contextualising knowledge. Maintaining this balance is critical to ensuring innovation strengthens rather than undermines education quality. It is disappointing when student submissions clearly rely on generative AI, sacrificing originality for generic perfection. This reinforces our commitment to preserving academic authenticity and intellectual honesty.
How does MANCOSA balance academic theory with practical experience to prepare future leaders?
At MANCOSA, the distinction between theory and practice is intentionally blurred. Many students are working professionals who bring real organisational challenges into the classroom, creating a practical context for learning. www. futuresa. co. za 61
