Article 50 of The Lisbon Treaty is a
rule that allows any member country
to leave the European Union, EU, and
gives them up to two years to work
out the arrangements.
In a vote on 23rd June 2016, the
majority in the United Kingdom chose
to leave the EU. No country has left
the EU before; it wasn't even possible
to leave legally before the Treaty of
Lisbon became law in December 2009.
Prime Minister The resa May 'triggered'
Article 50 on 29th March 2017 and the
UK was offi cially told it should leave
the EU by April 2019. This has been
nicknamed "Brexit", (Britain's exit).
