iMATTER Fuser Poem older readers War by William Beech by Alex Black, age 8 The other kids were just like me, scared. I was just a frightened child. Mr Tom speaks harshly to me. I was just a frightened child. I'm scared of Mr Tom. I was just a frightened child. I don't think Mr Tom really likes me, he's just doing it because he thinks he is meant to. I was just a frightened child. Everybody is laughing at me, I think. I was just a frightened child. I can't seem to make friends with anybody. I was just a frightened child. Nobody wants to be my friend, maybe I don't know how to be a friend. I was just a frightened child. Everybody is peering over the fence saying "You're one of those London kids". I was just a frightened child. I have never met such kindness in my life. I was just a frightened child. Mr Tom gives me my own bed, I have never had a bed. I was just a frightened child. He feeds me bacon, bacon is just for special people. I was just a frightened child. I am scared of cows, I don't like chickens. I was just a frightened child. Everybody is sort of laughing behind my back. I was just a frightened child. The war is strange, I have never heard the sound of planes and guns before. I was just a frightened child. All of my history books and the radio say war won't be declared for a second time. I was just a frightened child. Here I am evacuated, not knowing where I am. I was just a frightened child. Nobody has ever told me what war was like. I am just a frightened child. FUSE 15
