58 OBITUARIES Obituaries Paying tribute to a few of the people to have recently passed away CARLOS EZQUERRA Aged 70, 1 October C arlos is best known for co-creating the Judge Dread comic strip in 1974 which featured in science fiction comic 2000 AD. Alongside Judge Dread, Carlos created Strontium Dog for 2000 AD offshoot Starlord and would also go on to draw other characters for 2000 AD including Fiends of the Eastern Front and Stainless Steel Rat. In later years Carlos drew comics featuring under the DC Comics publishing company along with other publishers outside of 2000 AD. CHARLES AZNAVOUR Aged 94, 1 October C CHAS HODGES Aged 74, 22 September C has was the lead vocalist of singing duo Chas and Dave, the pair became well known for singalong British folk favourites such as Rabbit, Snooker Loopy and Ain’t No Pleasing You. The pair were also famous supporters of Tottenham Hotspur, writing numerous cup final songs for the team including Glory Glory Tottenham Hotspur and Ossie’s Dream, also known as Spurs Are On Their Way To Wembley, both of which are still sang by the club’s supporters. Despite common misconceptions, Chas and Dave did not record the Only Fools and Horses theme turning it down in 1985 on the back of the success of Ain’t No Pleasing You. DALE BARCLAY Aged 32, 25 September D ale was best known as the lead singer of cult indie rock band The Amazing Snakeheads, during the band’s short lived career they only released one album and a handful of singles, however they were revered for their electric live energy. The band and Barclay’s energetic stage presence received high praise from artists such as Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos who described him as “the essence of rock and roll”, and Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner who named the band’s song Here It Comes Again amongst his favourite songs. Following the break-up of The Amazing Snakeheads, Dale joined Glaswegian band And Yet It Moves. harles was a French-Armenian singer most well-known for tracks such as She, La Boheme and Emmenez-moi. Charles sold over 180 million records and featured in over 60 films during a career which lasted over 80 years. The singer was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017 and was named entertainer of the century by CNN in 1988. The singer was one of the few European artists to have duetted with Frank Sinatra, Charles also performed duets alongside Serge Gainsbourg, Elton John, Petula Clark and Edith Piaf. GEOFF EMERICK Aged 72, 2 October G eoff was best known for his sound engineering work on Beatles albums such as Revolver and Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Emerick’s most notable work with the Beatles was on the track Tomorrow Never Knows when he suggested to record John Lennon's vocal through a Leslie speaker to get an ethereal sound. After the breakup of the Beatles, Geoff worked on solo albums with Paul McCartney as well as albums by Elvis Costello, Kate Bush, Ultravox, The Zombies and Stealers Wheel. In 2007 Emerick was incharge of a tribute album to Sgt Peppers featuring bands such as The Killers, Oasis and Razorlight. GEOFFREY HAYES Aged 76, 1 October G eoffrey was best known for his starring role as the presenter of children’s TV show Rainbow. Geoffrey starred alongside puppet characters such as Bungle, George and Zippy, whose colour was changed from blue to tangerine at Geoffrey’s request due to the fact he was a massive supporter of Dundee United whose rivals Dundee wore blue. Once Rainbow had finished Geoffrey began working in his local Sainsbury’s and later as a taxi driver. He returned to television in an advert about investing money which made light of his fall from the top and continued to appear in adverts and on game shows until his death.
