The DIFFERENCE
This project has brought awe-inspiring marine education to the homes of hundreds of children, during an otherwise challenging time. Many teachers reported increased attendence at their online classes, as pupils were eager to learn more and get involved.
Our sessions support children to be confident, flexible and optimistic. They build a greater awareness of Scotland's seas and how we are all interconnected.
The live Q and A sessions enabled us to engage with pupils at their own level. This varied hugely between schools and individuals. For some, discovering that whales and dolphins can be seen so close to our shores was a huge realisation. Whereas others really valued the opportunity to ask questions about local research and the challenges these animals face. We also discussed pathways into conservation careers and jobs at sea, and in every session we were asked about our experiences of living and working on a sailing boat. In addition, every class took the opportunity to learn more about the incredible marine megafauna we have here in Scotland, with many children fascinated to find out what the largest whale was that we have recorded.
Teachers were really pleased with both the live and digital lessons and recognised the links to the Curriculum for Excellence, UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award. They also really valued the opportunity for children to hear the career journeys of our staff, opening up alternative career options for the children to consider and supporting their work towards developing the young workforce.
"It’s really great for the pupils to hear your career journey. Opportunities for jobs are quite limited here so it’s brilliant for them to learn about alternative careers.”
