CANADIAN HOME TRENDS & FLEXSTONE
Flexstone, a revolutionary seamless
waterproofing system has been rigorously
tested and approved by the Canadian
Construction Materials Council for
applications over living space – the only
liquid-applied membrane in the country to
be granted the highly coveted approval.
Flexstone is a four-ply liquid-applied
urethane system that boasts a thick odorless
base coat formulated to withstand heavy
traffic and harsh weather conditions. The
base coat is topped with a variety of
stunning and rugged finish coats including
acrylic chip blends that give the appearance
of textured stone while retaining the
system’s flexibility for decades and providing
protection from UV damage without any risk
of cracking or peeling.
Flexstone’s four decorative chip-blends
are specially designed to complement
nearly any home’s color scheme and allows
homeowners to coordinate a variety of
surfaces, like matching stairs, walkways and
even garage or basement floors.
These homeowners desperately needed a
deck membrane replacement at their home in
Port Moody, BC. The old vinyl membrane was
covered in patches and had started peeling
around the walls and flashing. The vinyl had to
be removed and the substrate subsequently
underwent some additional remediation. The
plan was to convert the space under their
deck into dry storage. Given that the space
was soon to be considered ‘living space’, an
approved roof membrane was required.
Flexstone, which had recently been granted
CCMC approvals, was a natural choice with
a seamless textured stone finish and inherent
slip resistance which was important to them.
A local certified Flexstone installer installed
new drip-edge flashing and troweled out
Flexstone’s thick solvent-free urethane
base coat and finished the deck with a
tan textured stone finish that matched the
existing exterior and it is now bright, clean
and easy to maintain.
This stunning development in Edmonton
features a Flexstone sundeck installed
by Chephren Building Solutions.
Developments are sparing no expense
when it comes to finishes and quality
and deck surfaces are no exception.
Traditionally, high-end home builders
would be left with two main options
for deck surfaces over living space:
vinyl rolled on membranes with visible
seams or asphalt based open-flame
applied roof membranes with heavy and
expensive pavers or deck boards. Today,
Flexstone offers an attractive third option.
Originally developed for ski-resort
decks, the Flexstone system is an ideal
solution for sundecks and flat roof decks
in harsher climates like northern Alberta
and Saskatchewan. It is quickly becoming
one of the most popular membranes
in new construction projects all across
Canada. - Flexstone Coatings, www.flexstones.ca
