The Kawartha’s Project is a modern approach to post and beam architecture. The cottage features are supported by large Douglas Fir timbers with long expanses of glass to take advantage of the amazing view of the lake. CANADIAN HOME TRENDS WHAT INSPIRED THE OVERALL DESIGN? LAKESIDE ARCHITECTURE The site inspired the design of the cottage. The cottage is situated in Eastern Ontario in the Canadian Shield. The site is steeply sloped towards the lake and features rocky outcrops and treed areas. Close to the water, there was a natural rock ledge and the idea was to place the cottage close to the lake but follow the site’s natural contours. The owners wanted a cottage that fit into the natural landscape and that reflected the natural materials of the site. As the cottage follows the site contours, it provides the optimum use of sunlight, views of lake and other natural areas. Siting the cottage so close to the lake but still having privacy and natural views of the site is what I and the homeowners found inspirational and exciting!
