When designing a new living room from scratch, I often work with up to 9 different fabric patterns. If that feels overwhelming, 7 is a great starting point: 4 patterns and 3 solids. The key to a cohesive colour scheme is to always begin with one inspirational fabric, often a bold floral like this one from Osborne & Little, and build from there: layering in stripes, geometrics, plaids, and solids. Odd numbers work best. Try using 3, 5, or 7 patterns in a room to create a sense of balance and visual interest without making the space feel overwhelming. Let your inspiration fabric guide the palette and scale of the rest.
