FULL CIRCLE ART • ART CLASSES • ART EXHIBITIONS Michelle Knight is a Trained ASTAR Facilitator, has studied art and is a qualified teacher. She currently runs creative art courses for adults, using the ASTAR methodology. She also facilitates one-off workshops for adult groups, as well as for parents and their children. She has been immersed in the ASTAR philosophy for many years and comments warmly, “I am completely passionate about holding a space that allows others to connect with their uniqueness, and express it through art making. It is such a privilege to witness students rediscovering their creative passion and freedom. Creativity is transforming, liberating and healing!” Art Exhibitions CASA LABIA A solo photographic exhibition by Natale Labia. Rock / Paper / Scissors is Natale Labia’s debut exhibition, and comprises a selection of images taken in Africa and India between 2008 and 2011. Labia uses photography as a means of initiating a strategic ‘game’ or conversation. The inside story – hear from 2 students in Michelle’s workshops: “Before every art class, I look forward with excitement, joy and anticipation to the surprise Michelle has planned for us. I also look forward to the totally unplanned, unexpected unfolding of individuality and creative inspiration. In this organized, safe, nurturing space, I can transform an experience, a thought, a mood or a feeling, into a tangible physical form. The fun part is the total lack of inhibition. With Michelle’s clear, gentle guidance, there is no need - (or time) - to think. We tap into unconscious processes with the generous variety of materials provided- inks, paints, pastels, papers, magazines, boot polish, music and clay (to name a few!). Many of these materials are forgiving and nonthreatening (I love the boot polish!). Experienced artists and novices co create side by side as equals! Michelle invites us to explore techniques: mixing colours, playing with light and dark, observing and seeing in another way. Each session has a focus which helps to unleash, the sheer joy of creative self expression, on this magical and colourful journey.” EH “... I have discovered so much about myself and my life through these creative processes. It’s amazing how art speaks! What a gift!” AM For those of you interested to view the work of two professional artists, who have been immersed in the ASTAR approach to art making, visit the following exhibitions: Tracy Payne’s “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy” at The Barnard Gallery, 55 Main Street, Newlands. Website: www. sajewishmuseum.co.za The work of both Payne and Abrahams exudes spontaneity, creative freedom and authenticity of expression - core to the ASTAR philosophy. Natale Labia – Rock/ Paper/ Scissors 192 Main Road, Muizenberg 13 September - 13 October Closed Mondays casalabia.co.za [email protected] 021 788 6068 This is initially created between the photographer and the subject, but subsequently to the viewer through the image. This allows for interpretative meaning to be created in ongoing ways. The depiction of people, in reportage style, is a regular theme in Labia’s work; they are portrayed as momentary, spontaneous figures; being themselves, and ourselves simultaneously. The game of rock, paper, scissors; is thereby the negotiated and contested territory of any engagement between two individuals.
