The New Nintendo 2DS!
reviewed by Amanda Stone
Possibly the most popular handled console
of this generation, the Nintendo 3DS has
held a very special place in many hearts
(and hands), until now! On the 12th of
October the brand spanking new 3DS
will be hitting shelves near you. Only, this
console isn’t actually a 3DS. That’s right,
folks. The new Nintendo 3DS… is a 2DS.
In a nutshell, the new Nintendo 2DS is
a revised, more pocket friendly version of
the 3DS, with a few obvious differences.
For starters, it now assumes a wedgelike tablet shape, and no longer folds
up all clam-like. It’s also super light, and
comes with a 4GB SD card, as opposed
to the 3DS, which comes standard with a
2GB memory card. It also doesn’t have a
power saving mode (sniffs).
But for the sake of familiarity (as well as
general awesomeness), the Nintendo 2DS
still sports most of the same hardware,
including Wi-Fi, Touch Screen technology,
and a charging time of about 3.5 hours. It
also comes with a charger, unlike the 3DSXL.
And the list of fun features supported
by the 2DS continues. It allows for players
to swap game data with other players
with the help of StreetPass. SpotPass
ensures players are kept up to date with
all the latest game content, videos and
news. Players are also able to play online
with their friends and other avid gamers.
And when away from their consoles,
players are able to put the 2DS on Sleep
Mode. This feature allows for data to be
exchanged within the game, without the
player even being present! Along with
the regular Touch Screen controls, the
2DS now also features motion sensors,
gyro sensors and augmented reality
capabilities.
Available in two different colour
combinations, black and blue or red and
white, the Nintendo 2DS will be available
from the 12th of October for an estimated
retail price of around R1599.
But perhaps most importantly, the 2DS
is backwards compatible. So there will
be no need for players to sacrifice their
beloved gaming collection, because it
can play all Nintendo 3DS games (as
well as most DS games in general) in 2D!
Aaaaaand eShop acess is available on the
2DS as well. Can we get a hallelujah!
