HIKING • SIGNAL HILL
Once back on the track, which becomes less distinct
from here on, you will round a corner into a deep gully.
A further 300m or so along, you will see some more
lookout/pillboxes on your left. A little later, you will find
another deep and overgrown gully where the path is
very indistinct. Make your way though the gully, and
when you’ve reached the spur on the other side,
make your way down the unclear path into the belt of
bluegums where you will intersect another well-defined
and historic path known as the Maskew’s Path, which
was named after Petrus Keytel Maskew (born 1858)
who was the Government Land Surveyor and the
patriarch of a well-known Sea Point family. He surveyed
and supervised the construction of the path, which
leads gently up the ‘flank’ of the lion back towards the
old car park, referred to earlier, and your parked car just
below you on the tarred road.
