HIKING • SIGNAL HILL
There are several other kramats on Signal Hill, some of
which are named, and others whose names are unknown.
The walk down the spine of the lion will take you towards
the parking lot on Signal Hill and past several kramats on
the way, which can be seen in the fynbos left of the path.
This path offers perhaps the best-available view of Table
Mountain encompassing Lion’s Head and Devil’s Peak.
The City Bowl views are also pretty impressive. As the path
begins to ascend the ‘rump’ of the lion, you will come to
a road which leads to a fenced and gated area. The path
leads off the road to the left of the fence.
Approximately 135m along this path you will see another
two old military installations, one of which housed a
generator. The path continues on up to the Signal Hill car
park, which is usually crammed with cars and visitors.
After taking in the views of Sea Point from the car park,
walk along Signal Hill Road around the bend for nearly
400m, until you see a dirt road lead back to your left. About
another 400m down this road a path heads down the spur
towards the fenced-off military encampment in which the
Noonday Gun is located. You will see several old bunkers
and gun positions through the security fence. If you’re
hiking during the week you can move right along the fence,
which descends steeply to the gate, and you can witness
the firing of the canon. Otherwise, walk left and down the
even steeper path to the jeep track that emerges from the
