helps by focusing on neutral alignment of body parts, to
prevent or minimise biomechanical problems. Providing

WHEN AND WHAT SHOULD BABY DO?
Milestones are the baby’s age-appropriate skills. It is so
important to know which motor skills the baby should
currently be engaged in, which ones the baby missed,
and which ones the baby should soon be engaging in.
Physiotherapists working in paediatrics are acutely
aware of the developmental sequence and work
towards establishing age-appropriate goals for each
baby. Developmental history is always so important

alignment of the baby’s body during the movement. Our
hands are trained to be sensitive to the baby’s active
participation, and gradually, control of the movements
is reduced as the baby’s own muscle control takes

activities which can be incorporated into the daily care
of the baby.
The Secret is PLAY!
The baby PhD-equivalent would be play - this is their full
time job during waking hours! Their curiosity through play
drives them to explore and learn about their world - they
“research and problem solve” ways to move and learn new
movement strategies.
Therapy is done in the context of play and it is the secret
formula for fun and successful treatments. Therapists select
and incorporate movement, equipment, toys, body parts
and music to motivate active participation of the tots for
play and learning.
