THE LOVELL GALLERY
139 Albert Road, Woodstock
Well-known local artist, Gila Simons Band, guides participants towards a completed Self Portrait. Without pressure, the group is encouraged to explore new ways of thinking, seeing and creating. No art experience is necessary and practising artists are welcome. Art materials will be supplied and charged at a cost of between R10 – R20 per session.
Week 1: Friday 16th August 10h00 -12h30
An introduction to the history of the self-portrait as well as familiarization of the materials to be used during the workshops and the preparation of the working surface. Some drawing experimentation and exploration is included.
Week 2: Friday 23rd August 10h00 -12h30
During the second workshop the group will familiarise themselves with their own facial physical structure. They will then learn the basic formula to creating a self-portrait.
Week 3: Friday 30th August 10h00 -12h30
An in-depth study of the use of charcoal and the final drawing of the self-portrait.
R250 per person per class, which includes coffee/tea and a muffin.

2013 Artists Competition Winners Group Exhibition
Selected for visual impact as well as strength of idea, this year’s Lovell Gallery Artist competition has uncovered 7 promising young artists, Vivien Kohler, Tshepo Mosopa’s, Marcus Viljoen, Luami Calitz, and Mike Emesbern. Each stands a chance to be awarded a solo exhibition. This ultimate award will be won by the artist judged to have the most authentic and fresh approach to art-making and the greatest capability of continuously creating new pieces that deserve our attention. The gallery will work with the selected overall winner to develop their potential until they are ready for a professional solo.

The show follows the flow of artists on a roll; moving between the two plains of experiencing and expressing. We generate and maintain, allowing ourselves to be swept along stream, contributing to the sea of creativeness. We aim only to share, knowing that inspiration is complete. We breathe with the planet – in and out. Without a doubt! There is something here if you are willing to lend us your ear: listen, smell, feel and see - come and appreciate life’s beauty. Opening 24th August at 11am in the Main Gallery with walkabouts and artists performances on each consecutive Saturday thereafter, at the same time.
