The historic championship attracted more than 380 athletes spanning five continents. With a strong tradition in the sport of Ocean Racing, the South African athletes certainly demonstrated their talent throughout the 20km race. To be a canoeist, you need power, stamina, and an understanding of the sea and prevailing winds. To win a World Championship you would have to add determination, dedication, perseverance and a little more than a touch of competitiveness. These qualities can be found in our inspirational trio; Sean Rice, Overall Winner, and student at Varsity College; Kirsten Flanagan, winner of the Junior Women’s section, and pupil at Springfield Covent School; and Kenny Rice, winner of the Junior Boys section and pupil at the Bergvliet School. These three heros are lifeguards at the Fish Hoek Surf Lifesaving Club, and are trained by coach Peter Cole. In the women’s race South Africa occupied every spot on the podium, with Michele Eray edging out her compatriot, Michelle Burn by just over a second, to take gold by the slimmest of margins. Bronze went to Nikki Mocke. In the Non-World Championship Events, Grant Walt won the Men’s U23 race, with fellow countryman, Brandon Walt taking second place. In the Women’s U23 race, Bianca Beavitt claimed third. South Africa also took the top three positions in the Junior Men’s category, with Kenny Rice - younger brother of Sean Rice – finishing first, and Nicholas Notten and Gene Prato second and third respectively.
