Go-cart races, push-carts, scooters and bicycles….in fact, learning to ride a bicycle is still considered an important milestone, a life skill. With this proficiency on wheels, comes a new freedom and independence in a child’s life, where it moves from the safety of the yard at home and begins to explore and become part of the greater community. This new independence requires a certain level of responsibility, both on the child, and the communities’ part. The child, often a teenager by now, is confronted with an identity crisis: “How do I fit into this community? What is my role and contribution? What kind of adult will I choose to be as I move from childhood into maturity?” The community faces a similar responsibility as the child makes his way out into the world. Not only their parents, but the larger community becomes the teacher. So, how we engage with the children we encounter, will shape them. All this activity outdoors is essential to a child’s development, both physically and emotionally; yet according to the Children’s Play Council, 2002; Rivkin, 1995: “In a constantly evolving world, social and environmental factors have greatly impacted on children’s opportunities for outdoor play.
