FULL CIRCLE H E A LT H Burning mouth syndrome Burning mouth syndrome causes chronic burning pain in your mouth. The pain from burning mouth syndrome may affect your tongue, gums, lips, inside of your cheeks, roof of your mouth, or widespread areas of your whole mouth. The pain can be severe, as if you scalded your mouth. Unfortunately, the cause of burning mouth syndrome often can’t be determined. Although that makes treatment more difficult, by working closely with your healthcare team, you can usually get burning mouth syndrome under control. Causes can be anything from a variety of oral conditions, psychological conditions, nutrient deficiencies, allergies, tongue thrusting, teeth grinding, to hormonal imbalances and medications. The health risks are severe, and in the Western Cape 33% of adolescent males and 19% of adolescent females smoke! Whilst the Government has tried to do its bit to cut down on smoking, such as not sell to under 18’s, not allow smoking in private cars if there is a child under 12 yrs of age present, only allow smoking in designated public areas, and seriously clamp down on tobacco advertising, over 44 000 people still die from tobacco related illnesses annually.
