5 Coega Green Ammonia Project – Coega, Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa
Hy2Gen’ s Courant renewable ammonia project will be its first in Canada. The project aligns with the province of Quebec’ s aspiration to achieve carbon-neutrality in the province’ s industrial sector by manufacturing and employing renewable ammonia. The project’ s location is meant to feed into different industries as a renewable energy source beyond the company’ s own project parameters. The plant will have an electrolyzer capacity of 300 MW and should be completed by 2028, with production expected to be operational shortly after. Nitrogen will be created in an air separation plant, while the hydrogen will be produced through electrolyzers for the creation of renewable ammonia that will be used to produce green livestock for Quebec inhabitants. Hydropower will supply energy to both plants, allowing for climateneutral ammonia production. The ammonia production output is anticipated to be 230,000 tonnes, and 2.5TWh of energy will be required each year. 3
Recognizing the global demand for ammonia that meets the burgeoning needs of the agricultural, chemical, mining, and maritime industries, Hive Hydrogen South Africa has committed to the construction of a green ammonia plant. The project, which will receive support from Hive Energy and Built Africa, is situated in the Coega Special Economic Zone by the Port of Ngqura in the vicinity of superior harbors and will be powered by 3.5 GW of renewable energy. The plant is expected to produce one million tons of green ammonia per year that will be exported to other global markets, including the United States, Europe, and the Far East. In addition, the region has access to rich resources and a highly skilled population. Hive Hydrogen SA is responsible for the development of numerous green ammonia projects around the world. 5
